Spoiler-Free Overview

The time of the four horsemen of the apocalypse is here. Five years after the horsemen arrived on Earth and quickly disappeared, Pestilence is back. The world is in chaos and the plague is wiping out cities, killing people without care or remorse.

Sara Burns, along with her fellow firefighters, come up with a plot to kill Pestilence, and Sara has drawn the short straw to be the one to pull the trigger. While everyone else evacuates, Sara waits to hunt the horseman. But she quickly learns he can’t be killed.

Pestilence takes Sara hostage to punish her for brutally attacking him. Now the two ride across the country

Liz’s Thoughts and Feelings

All 5 stars! Some part of my brain says it’s probably more like 4.5 or 4.75, but my heart feels that 5. This book has so many plot and relationship growth aspects that I love, which makes it easy to overlook any of the issues.

The Good

My all time favorite troupe is enemies to lovers, which so many books can’t quite hit. To do it right, it needs to be slow burn. I love reading how far apart two characters are, and the mystery becomes can they possibly end up in love. I was immediately asking how the author was going to have these characters overcome all the bad they’ve done to each other.

The writing style is so refreshing compared to many supernatural romances. It was mature, full of emotional depth, and yet maintained the sass of Sara in her perspective.

The Not as Good

Near the end, the plot became a tiny bit repetitive. The scenes and problems the characters faced were coming at us so fast that they all stayed at the same emotional level. I think it would have been better served to take one or two scenes and make them bigger – longer, larger consequences, more buildup – instead of having several smaller scenes.
